My back hurts, does any one have any suggestions?

Since the birth of my son I have had pain in my lower back. But last night I was giving my son a bath, and we have a deep bath tub. When I picked him up, he resisted a little because he wanted to stay. Anyway as I began to lift i fely horrible pain shoot from lower back and down my legs. It hurts to lift, walk, cough, anything really. I realize i probably pulled something, but any advice on relieving the pain would be greatly appreciated!?!
This sounds like a pretty classic slipped disc in the lumbar spine. The disc is soft tissue that sits between the bones of your spine like a cushion, and they can sometimes come out. Pregnancy can cause or aggravate those problems, and so can lifting. The lumbar (lower) spine is where nerves for your legs begin, so when the nerve is pushed by a slipping disc, you can get shooting pains in the leg.

Unfortunately, this injury is a long-lasting one. Slipped discs can take a long time (several years) to heal. If you see a doctor, though, he or she may perform a steriod epidural and inject cortisone into your spine. That will shut down the inflammation, help your pain, and encourage the disc to pull back into place. If the pain is something you can deal with, you can ask your GP or a specialist for some pain medication.

See your physician rather than a chiropractor, you
