Bad Ankle Pain... what is it?

I was playing hockey today and just as I was running out of the changing rooms, I slipped off a little step and my ankle went to one side; it hurt like mad! Whilst I was playing, it didn't seem to hurt so bad... but now it hurts like crazy and I'm not even moving it plus I can't walk on it without severe pain. The thing is, it's not very swollen at all... what could this be?!

Thanks, Clare.

Claire it seems to me that you have a sprained ankle get a tea towel with some ice in it and wrap it round the ankle or get a frozen bag of peas and rest it against the ankle this will help alot.

Painkillers will ease the pain, but before you take them make sure you check that you are not allergic to anything in them and that you take the right dosage for your age. You could ask a parent.

I am not a medical professional and this is only my opinion the best advice you can get is from your doctor which i think you should go and see if things dont improve.

You probably pulled a ligament. However, it is always advisable to get anything like this checked out with an x-ray as it is the only thing that will tell you what is going on. Sounds like you might not have the right trainers on; they need to be supportive around the ankle and most good shoe shops will be able to tell what sort of tread you have by getting your imprint on a special machine. You would be surprised at the different emphasis individuals put on the various parts of their feet while running and or walking. If you can afford it, you can buy special trainers to suit your style of walking or simply buy gel inserts to correct the trainers/shoes you have already got. Believe me, it is worth getting the proper shoes, especially if you are going to be doing a lot of exercise.

Sounds like just a tweek, if it was broken you would'nt have been able to play. Put it in hot water, then ice water and repeat 5 times and apply some deep heat on it and it will be fine in a day or so : )

Sounds like you've sprained it. Rest it, keep it up and put ice on it. Depending on how badly you've sprained it, it could take a couple of weeks to heal

sounds like you've torn your ligaments, i did it last month. doesn't hurt that bad at the start but afterwards its really bad. it takes 6 - 8 weeks to heal

X- ray will tell ?
