Sometime honey can help as it coats the throat. You could try "honey and linctus" its a syrup which can be bought over the counter which is good for soothing. Trying taking some paracetamol to help any fever you might have, and some ibuprofen to help the swelling round your tonsils. If you spot any white lumps on your tonsils, then i really would advise that you see a doctor, as this would be a obvious indication of tonsilits, which, left untreated, can cause permanent damage to the tonsils, and some cases, needs surgery if the infection is bad. (Because I live in the UK I cant help much with the insurance problem as in the UK we have a National Health Service - so treatment is completely free) Hope this helps, good luck!

I have found that when my tonsils play up that a salt water solution as a gargle works well. I do this 3 or 4 times a day and also 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of honey to be swallowed slowly helps to lubircate the throat lining and calms the swelling. and ofcourse lots of water too.

Hot steam like in a hot shower or hot tea. Keep away from things that will make you congested like things with a lot of sugar like soda or coffee or orange juice or milk. Drink hot tea or hot cocoa.
